Canon version as of Nov 2024
Serves one, or like two/three ish if you use it as a side without sausage.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup white rice (I use store brand fred meyers white rice)
- 1/2 cup orzo pasta
- 1 sausage (canon is Hill’s Premium Meats Red Hot Sausage)
- 1 onion large dices
- 1-3 garlic cloves smashed
- 1/2 - 1 jalapeno pepper diced
- 1/2 - 1 serrano pepper diced
- 1 tsp of Better Than Bullion - Seasoned Vegetable Base (Or 1 ish vegetable/chicken bullion cube)
- 1 1/2 cup water (Or however much according to the type of rice you use)
- 2 -4 tbsp Olive oil (Or enough to coat rice and vegetables)
- 1/2 cup (or more to taste) soy sauce
- 1/4 - 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp Parsley flakes
- 1 tbsp Celery Seed
Cooking directions
Oil a pan/pot (I use a 2 quart saucepan) and heat peppers, onion, garlic on medium high heat. (Or as desired). Mix in salt, parsley, celery seed. Add rice and orzo pasta and oil rice and pasta, enough for an even coat. Cook a couple minutes or more until onions start to become clear.
Add bullion and then add hoisin sauce, adjusting for taste followed by water in the required amount for the type of rice. (I use Fred Meyers Store brand white rice its about 1 1/2 cups water for specified amounts) Bring to a simmer while stirring to make sure everything mixes up. Once at a simmer add sausage and simmer for for 16-20 minutes undisturbed or until rice is the desired fluffy.
After simmering add in the soy sauce and stir into rice. (Specified amount is what I usually use however do this to flavor since I use a lot more than specified at times when I am feeling soy.) Then let sit for 5 minutes and serve.
Notes
Sausage can be replaced with any protein that is vegan such as tofu baked to a nice firm consistency added in at the end is very yummy however I have not had much experiments with it. The rice is perfectly yummy without the sausage in case you’re lacking cuz you’re poor like me. More hoisin sauce is great however after a point adding more doesn’t add much except oiliness. You can use another savory sauce such as a bbq or jerk sauce, (I’m sure there are others I just have tried them) just anything to make the rice yummy that goes good with spicy. Soy sauce is best added at the end and I usually let it warm up and simmer for a few more minutes before letting it cool. However the timing of the soy sauce is still being researched.
